The wide-angle camera performs quite well in the lab. A point of criticism is the unnecessarily aggressive signal tuning. However, you should do without zooming. Since there is no second camera, the zoom is always digital, which reduces the image quality considerably.
Wide angle (main camera) – 1.8/4.7 mm,
(full-frame equivalent: 25 mm),
48 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 MP OR 48 MP
Our rating is based on the 12 megapixel JPEG shots. In the measurement lab, we could not determine a relevant advantage of the 48 MP photos over the 12 MP images even under the most favorable lighting conditions (5000 lux). The detail level is virtually the same - with a minimal advantage of the 48 in places. In high light, it is not worth switching to 48 megapixels, and when the light fades the 12 megapixel shots win. In addition, the image files remain smaller and are also sent faster via Wi-Fi. The aggressive image tuning is striking. The signal boost is particularly strong in structures with low contrasts. The edge enhancement for better sharpness impression is really strong. The image quality does not degrade much when the light decreases slightly (200 lux): We measured slightly less resolution. The losses are most noticeable in fine details with low contrasts. At night (5 Lux), the performance drops significantly. The resolution drops, noise and artifacts now clearly disturb the picture impression. Xiaomi tries to save what cannot be saved with a very aggressive signal processing - fine details are hardly recognizable at 5 Lux.
Normal focal length – 1.8/4.7 mm,
(full-frame equivalent: 50 mm), 48 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 MP
Again, digital zooming, even at a small factor of 2x, leads to strong losses compared to the wide-angle camera. In a lot of light, structures look poor in detail as well as - despite edge post-processing and contrast enhancement - softly drawn, albeit quite low-noise. At 200 lux, the noise increases and the JPEG is almost alienated. At night (5 lux), we hardly see any drawing in the 2x zoom.
